5 Social Media Mistakes That Are Costing You

Through the years of working in the digital marketing and social media world, I have found out my top 5 mistakes that are costing you engagement and following on your social media accounts.

  1. Buying Instagram followers or likes
  2. Inconsistent posting or no prior scheduling
  3. Not posting original content
  4. Poor grammar and spelling
  5. Not engaging with your followers

Buying Instagram Followers & Likes

Never do this.

First off, it is expensive to do I am talking hundreds and hundreds of dollars for a few thousand followers. Second, the followers that you purchase hardly ever engage with your content which in result makes them worthless.

You can monetize off your Instagram with as little as 100 followers, you don’t need to have thousands to start turning a profit. As long as you have original and valuable content for your followers that you can start to build trust with, your number of followers is irrelevant.

Inconsistent Posting/Lack of Scheduling

Your accounts will only be seen if you post to your account, trust me, no one is searching for your brand. Stay away from posting all your content at once because it results in crowding your followers feed and often results in lost followers.

You should be posting a minimum of once per day depending on the industry. I use Tailwind for my Instagram and Pinterest scheduling, Facebook has internal scheduling and I use TweetDeck for my twitter account. The more you are posting the more people will engage with your brand. Note: just because you post doesn’t mean they will come to your page, there is a lot more to building engagement on Instagram, but a schedule is a good starting point.

Not Posting Original Content

This one should be self-explanatory. No one wants to read the same thing over and over again, take what you learned and explain in your own words. There are so many apps out there these days that check for plagiarism, don’t be that person.

No one is expecting you to be able to write like Stephen King out the gate, the best way to critique and grow your writing skills is by writing and reading as much as possible.

Tip: Become a part of the Grammarly community, they have taught me tons & helped my writing sound 150% better than when I began.

Poor Grammar & Spelling

Reading posts and seeing poor grammar and spelling to me is just laziness, a strong sign that you truly don’t care. There are hundreds of apps out there to help you out. Check out Grammarly if you are struggling with grammar and spelling, it will change your life and remove a lot of stress.

Not Engaging With Your Audience

Last but not least, your brand is nothing if you don’t engage with your audience. Engaging with your audience answers questions brings up new ideas and more. People love to be noticed and being noticed by a brand creates a loyalty that you will be grateful for as time goes on. And, it is simple, all you have to do is respond to comments and messages, comment on other photos and videos and trigger conversations.

You can do it, it isn’t too hard, I promise.
